A Bear's Life - George Perry with Alfred Bestall

This hard to find and for a number of years now 'Out of Print' work was originally published in 1985, and is a profusely illustrated book containing a history of Rupert from immediately after First World War. Reprinted and updated the information goes up to 1990. There is a list of annuals at the end together with identification 'stories'. A very useful addition for the Rupert collector or just a fascinating look at one of the most enduring of childrens fictional characters. (*Limited stock)

Life & Works of Alfred Bestall - Caroline Bott (PB)

The result of many years careful and painstaking research, the author has pieced together the life of her godfather Alfred (‘Fred’) Bestall, who illustrated Rupert Bear in the Daily Express for 30 years (the only day he missed was to make way for Churchill’s war speech). The artwork was bequeathed by Fred Bestall to the author with the words — 'you will probably want to make a bonfire of this' — which would have been a tragedy. Caroline Bott has lovingly collected together and catalogued Fred Bestall's work, which ranges from incisive cartoons for Punch to romantic, dreamy watercolours, as well of course as his Rupert Bear illustrations. Caroline was also bequeathed his diaries, from which, alongside letters, photographs and other archive material, she has drawn together his life. What emerges is a gentle, very generous man, who was loved by all who met him. His diaries include his experiences in the First World War, and his travel diaries include remarkable journeys to Egypt as well as those of his beloved Wales. His fans are as diverse as Prince Charles, Terry Jones and Terence Stamp.

Title story Rupert And Neddy - Also includes Rupert And The Silent Dog, an original Bestall story for this series. A few light pencil marks on rear cover. Tiny tear to left edge of front cover. Contents are clean and apart from these minimal faults this is a beautiful fine copy.

This super book has 76 pages of stories and pictures by Mary Tourtel and is is near fine condition apart from a small bit of damage to bottom corners. Originally published in 1977 by Purnell, exclusively for BHS. This edition is 1984. The stories are, Rupert and The Snowman, Rupert and Bingo, Rupert and the Magic Drum, Rupert and the Stolen Apples & Bill Badger's Picnic Party. Written wholly in rhyme this book is packed with beautiful illustrations. Spine is complete. Again a lovely book for a collector, but equally nice for Mums and Dads to introduce the little ones to the world of Rupert Bear. Dont get caught out reading Rupert & the Magic Drum at bedtime though - it's 32 pages long! 1 only available.

Dot to dot, colouring, activity and colouring by numbers make this set. Glossy card covers, printed on pulp paper. All are unused and are in mint condition after 20 years. Tempo Talking Stories issued a large library of storybooks with audio tapes in 1984 for many popular characters (Dangermouse, Noddy, Mr Men and Wind in the Willows to name but a few). For Rupert they issued a set of four - and here they all are, in mint condition and unopened. The stories are Rupert Bear and the Young dragon, Rupert Bear and The Lonely Bird (pictured), Rupert Bear and the Hidden Lake and Rupert Bear and the Muddled Magic. A superb collection of mint condition items. Sorry I can not split these.
